Swimming pool and spa designs have gone way past the old cement pond in the ground.

Lagoon-style free-form pools with rock grottos and waterfalls are still popular, especially in yards bordering desert preserves, but many homeowners these days are opting for a classic look.

Geometric pools with even lines are a hot trend, said John Miller, owner of BlueWave Pools & Spas. Features such as raised pillars and walls with cultured stone, bob? scuppers, wok pots, fire pots and natural stone decking such as flagstone or travertine carry architectural accents through to the backyard.

Water features such as deck jets, which shoot thin streams up and into the pool, also are big. So is the Hayward ColorLogic pool light, which brings a little bit of Fremont Street into the water with various colors and patterns.

Inside pools, tile-top or stone-top tables, stools and swim-up bars add resort flair right at home. For interior finishes, Pebble Tec finish and its smoother sister, Pebble Sheen, are in demand, but so is Ultra-Poz, a hard finish that gives the “blue sparkly looking water, the ‘I want to dive in my pool’ look,” Miller said.

The two main pool cleaners that BlueWave uses are the Hayward Pool Vac and the Paramount in-floor system with pop-up heads that effortlessly clean the steps and benches. Pool water can be purified with chemicals, salt or ozone, and the right choice depends on the customer’s needs and the building materials used.
